The philosophy
THE AEROW is the game-changer in terms of aerodynamics in endurance sports. This is due in part to the outstanding technical features of the wind tunnel and in part to the philosophy behind the aero optimization.
To achieve a sustainable and applicable improvement in aerodynamics during training and competition, simply lowering the cockpit and positioning the athlete lower and more stretched out is not sufficient. To maximize aero potentials, the process begins on the path to the perfect riding position in biomechanics. In our HYCYS BikeFitting labs in Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg, or directly on site in Bad Wörishofen we create stable riding positions, open hip angles, improve pedalling patterns, and reduce unnecessary movements on the saddle.
This establishes the biomechanical foundation. In the wind tunnel, a baseline of flow resistance is then determined. Under the guidance of experienced aerodynamicists, the individual position is gradually brought toward the aero optimum. We fully leverage the potential because we make the interaction between biomechanics and aerodynamics a prerequisite to mould man, machine, and material into a unified entity – with optimal stability and a low CdA!
The Wind Tunnel
THE AEROW’s wind tunnel in Bad Wörishofen, Bavaria, sets new standards in aerodynamic optimization for endurance sports. Built according to the Göttingen design, the wind tunnel is independent of external environmental conditions, allowing year-round use. Specifically designed for cyclists and triathletes, a specific component layout enables an economically viable operation exclusively for endurance athletes. To enable realistic riding, the bike is clamped on some kind of indoor bike trainer allowing power outputs of up to 1,200 watts.
While the wind tunnel is designed for cyclists and triathletes, its measurement accuracy rivals that of a Formula 1 wind tunnel. The central component of the tunnel is the highly precise 6-component scale from RUAG, providing real-time flow data. Measurements of flows can be conducted at speeds of up to 120 km/h, and side wind simulations are possible up to 45°.
But that’s not all: In addition to pure aero optimization for cyclists and triathletes in the wind tunnel, we also offer product developments. CFD simulations are also possible, determining the optimal aero construction. Thus, all developments are handled by qualified hands as needed.
In terms of construction, we have also placed special emphasis on sustainability: The building consists of a chemical-free full wood wall system. Energy is obtained from a photovoltaic system, covering about 95% of the required energy needs along with its water storage.
Das Team
Behind THE AEROW project are two of the most renowned companies in their respective industries: From the automotive industry comes aem GmbH, that have been engaged for decades in the development, conceptualization, construction, and operation of wind tunnels. From endurance sports comes HYCYS, a European leader in coaching, performance diagnostics, bike fittings, and aero optimizations in the velodrome.
In the team, the worlds of engineering and sports science are brought together: Vehicle engineers and measurement technicians, under the leadership of Joachim Wenzkus, have independently developed the wind tunnel for the specific conditions of endurance athletes. Sport scientists and biomechanics experts, led by Björn Geesmann, have contributed the special challenges of the “test subject” athlete to the development and are establishing the wind tunnel in endurance sports.
In the operational business, sports scientists and biomechanics experts accompany the content process of bike fitting and wind tunnel testing; engineers and measurement technicians ensure, among other things, the operation of the wind tunnel and technical quality assurance, including CFD simulations in the course of product development.
